It was this same George Frideric Handel , impetuous and impulsive by nature, who while listening to the great Italian violinist Archangelo Corelli slay one of Handel 's compositions , grabbed the violin from the greatest virtuoso in Europe and demonstrated the proper way to play the piece.

On August 22, 56-year-old Handel sequestered himself in his London home and began to compose music to the biblical texts heralding the life of Jesus Christ. In just 23 days he completed a 260-page oratorio. He titled the massive work Messiah. Handel told the sponsors of the premier performance of Messiah in Dublin, Ireland, on April 13, 1742. Handel's Messiah is in three parts. Part I describes the advent and birth of Christ, with the chorus "For unto us" demarcating the transition from one to the other. Part II details the life of Christ, his resurrection, his ascension to heaven, the preaching of the gospel by his apostles, and a vision of his ultimate victory.
